The origin of the VW logo is not entirely clear yet, because a retired tyrolean graphic designer claims to have a stake in the logo's creatorship.

Nikolai Borg, who is 86 years old now, took legal action against the corporation VW AG, and is trying to prove that he participated in the design of the logo.

Back then, Mr. Borg was a young graphic designer, who in 1939 was accepted an unusually good bid: He should design the logo for the Volkswagen works in Fallersleben (today: Wolfsburg).

He delivered 9 drafts, two of which featured a "W" with a "V" on top. In the same year, Borg was enlisted in the military. In november 1939 he received his drafts back and a letter which said that logo development would be postponed until the ultimate victory.

The next time he saw the logo was in 1942, when he saw it on the hub cap of a car. Today, the company denies the existence of this letter, and Borg is trying to proove its existence with the help of two witnesses.

This legal dispute around the origin of the VW-Logo will most likely wear on.
