A triangle can be used with the tip pointing upwards (A shape) or downwards (V shape). When triangles are used, most times they are equilateral triangles. However, a triangle can be (and is) also used and displayed in any angle.

The following meanings are attributed to triangles:

A triangle with the tip pointing upwards - the "A shape":

Associated words include mountains, roofs, tents, pyramids, confers, also strong, sharp. More meanings in Archetypes.

A triangle with the tip pointing downwards - the "V shape":

An archetypic meaning of the V shape is the vulva. The symbol also means danger, warning, aggression. It is often associated with road traffic. Even though it doesn't necessarily have a red border, a V shaped triangle reminds us of warning signs and the give way sign.

Triangles, and the number 3 in general, also have a religious meaning. They are a symbol of light and life and symbolize the holy trinity.
