Rectangles seem neutral to us. A square is a special form of a rectangle - namely an equilateral rectangle - so its neutral effect is even stronger.

Squares and rectangles are associated with the following qualities:

statics, building materials, building bricks, reliability, order, symmetry, stacking, and stability. Because of these meanings, these shapes are often used in the building industry etc.

If a square is only displayed as a contour, we think of a frame, and that is also a frequent utilization of a squares or rectangles. The frame doesn't need to be drawn through, it can also be dashed or open owork (see Contours.

Squares and rectangles can be pictured in many ways, so they are a simple and good means of design. They can also be rotated 45°, and become rhombuses or diamonds. They may be filled or consist only of a contour, or just be suggested by 2 lines. Also, the corners can be chamfered.
