TIFF files (Tagged Image File Format), or TIF files, use a pixel image file format.

TIFF can contain a wide range of colour depths, alpha channels, paths etc. It is a very versatile format. Another advantage of TIFF is its platform independence.

TIFF also allows designers to save several layers.

Tagged Image Files can be opened and edited with most prevalent graphics programs.

Most times, TIFF files are very big, especially if you use multiple layers, so they are only suitable for the print sector. This format is not common on the web.

TIFF can also be compressed (e.g. using the lossless LZW process).
