THe QXD-format is the in-house format of the program QuarkXPress. QXD stands for "Quark Express Document".

QXD files contain neither images nor fonts. They have to be transferred separately, which is a common error source.

Moreover, this format can not be imported using other programs, and QuarkXPress only lets you create PS files or EPS pages.

For a long time, QuarkXPress was one of the most commonly used layout programs. InDesign is Adobe's competitive product. QuarkXPress is arguably still commonly used, but because of its limited possibilities, more and more designers are switching to InDesign.
