5. Types of Logos

On logos, brands and their subgroups

It is often confusing to distinguish between the different types of brands. That is because a brand can often be attributed to more than just one type.

 

For the sake of clarity, the different types of brands are listed in this chapter, complete with some examples of popular brands for every type.

 

Moreover, this chapter contains the definitions of wordmark and figurative mark, and the combination of these two.

Character marks


Character marks, or letter marks, are logos that consist of single alphabetic characters, abbreviations or numbers. 

Wordmarks


When designing wordmarks, but also character- or letter marks, make sure that the selected font fits the client, i.e. the company or product. 

Figurative marks


For figurative marks, a multitude of pictorial symbols can be used - ranging from animals, nature objects, humans, mythical creatures, to abstract depictions, t... 

Combinations


A combination of word- and figurative marks is what us humans usually comprehend the fastest. In most cases, the recollection of these logos is better as well.
