Signets are also used to identify a product or a company. "Signet" is the actual term for "sign". The word is based on the latin word "signum" and actually means "engraved label", but is frequently used in the meaning of "emblem" or "sign".

In the past, signets were used by compositors or publishers in publications, they were also called printer's imprints.

Even today, the books of many publishers have signets printed on their spines.

Signets are mostly based on armorial bearings. Signets are purely graphical symbols.
