Ragged setting

Also known as asymmetrical typesetting

Ragged setting is sometimes also called asymmetrical setting or anaxial setting.

The lines of a text are vertically aligned along the left or right margin, while the respective other end of each line just ends freely.

When using flush left or flush right text, you should try to minimize syllable division while maintaining an opcitally aesthetic run-out.

Some DTP-programs allow for the specification of a "separation area". If a word is placed in this area but doesn't fit into the line, it is separated when possible.

If a ragged setting is manually adjusted so that the line lenghts are almost exactly alike, it is called a rough setting.
