Pixel- / Vector format

Pixel logos are have a limited usableness

The fields of application of a logo are diverse, and often, they are not fully foreseeable in the beginning. This is why in almost any case, a logo MUST be designed in a vector format (more information in "File Formats").

In those cases where the use of a pixel image is absolutely required, you can resort to using a pixel image file format. However, even in that case, you should still design the rest of the logo in a vector file format. Most vector formats can also contain pixel information.

If a pixel image is required, it should be used in the best resolution possible, so the logo can be scaled as much as possible.

The most important advantage of vector logos lies in their unlimited scalability. No matter how much you enlarge a vector logo, it will never get "pixelated". They will never show the unattractive sawtooth distortions that would appear in pixel images or pixel-based logos.

Vector-based programs that are ideal for logo design:

  • Macromedia Freehand

    Adobe Illustrator

Both of these programs allow for the insertion of pixel images, in case you absolutely need to.
